SPAL slipping towards the drop

After a 3-0 hammering at the hands of Sampdoria at the weekend, SPAL are sliding towards the drop. The league’s bottom side have just 19 points after 30 games, leaving them eight shy of safety as they prepare for this home encounter. Even a win here wouldn’t boost their survival chances that much, but failing to win could see them completely written off.

Udinese are among the sides who are just outside the bottom three, but they’ve rallied in order to pull away from danger. The Zebrette head into this one looking for another three points on their travels. They won’t get many easier opportunities to do that than a visit to the league’s bottom side in an empty ground.

SPAL’s home struggles

It’s hard to see anything but relegation for the hosts at this point. Crotone (in 2016/17) were the only side that managed to avoid relegation amongst those with fewer than 20 points after the first 30 rounds of a Serie A season. That run is likely to be extended with the hosts in shaky form here, while the visitors have stepped up their game in recent weeks. They come into this one having scored twice in each of their last three games, a run which has seen them hold Genoa to a draw and win away to Roma.

The visitors are doing just enough to pull away from the drop in a campaign which has plenty of struggling sides hanging around the bottom three. Udinese’s victory in Rome in their last trip suggests that they can pull off a result here, especially since they’ve taken seven points from their other three trips to the bottom four. With SPAL possessing the league’s worst home record, the value lies with the visitors in our first prediction.

Udinese have conceded 26 times away from home this season, so they aren’t expected to keep a clean sheet at SPAL. We’ve already seen an exciting, high-scoring return for Italian football, so a 2-1 victory for the visitors is our correct score prediction.
