Santos looked in danger of falling completely out of the title race a few weeks ago but they are just hanging on in there although with a 6 point deficit on the leaders, they could do with a few favours from other teams.

They’re doing all they can right now. Santos come into this match chasing a 4th straight victory in the league. That run started with an excellent comeback victory over defending champions Corinthians when they were missing a host of players through injury and suspension. That looks to have really galvanised them as they’ve backed it up with a 1-0 win in a tricky game at in-form Botafogo and a dramatic 3-2 win over struggling Santa Cruz last weekend. Santos conceded an equaliser in the 11th minute of stoppage time only to go straight up the other end and score again to claim a vital 3 points.

They are up against Recife opposition again this weekend but Sport aren’t in good form. They have won just 1 of their last 8 matches in all competitions which was a 5-3 win against Santa Cruz. However 3 of their last 5 games have ended in 1-0 defeats so that free-scoring afternoon looks like a bit of a one-off occurrence. Discounting that game they’ve only scored one goal in their last 7 games in all competitions and that must give Santos real cause for optimism here.

Given that it’s perhaps a little surprising that Sport Recife are still the clear bookies favourites to win this. Santos aren’t normally great travellers which may explain it but they have won 4 of their last 10 away league games, which is pretty good in a division where home advantage counts for an awful lot. With the visitors in good form, backing Double Chance – Draw or Santos at 8/11 looks to offer value here.
