Stevenage vs Exeter Predictions

It may have been the occasion, or perhaps it was the pressure of playing in front of the Sky Sports cameras first time out, but Stevenage were poor on match-day one, as they lost by two goals to nil away against League Two new boys Salford. Boss Dino Maamria will be hoping that returning home sparks an improved performance. In contrast, Exeter, who won first time out, will be looking to take another step in the right direction.

There really was very little for Stevenage to shout about on the opening day, as they were second best, especially in terms of attacking ideas. Maamria’s men started the game slowly; they were reasonably sloppy in possession, while they found it very tough to build up a head of steam going forward. Their attacking afternoon can be summarised by a rather weak total of just 0.24 expected goals for.

Not only did Stevenage struggle going forward, but they also failed to prevent Salford from doing the business in the final third. The Boro conceded 14 shots, five of which hit the target, while they conceded a rather poor 1.98 expected goals for. Overall, they got nothing from their trip to Lancashire because they deserved nothing.

Unlike Saturday’s hosts, Exeter delivered a disciplined, gritty display to grind out a 1-0 win during the opening weekend. Macclesfield don’t batter many teams, but ever since Sol Campbell took over, the Silkmen are a tough side to get the better of, so Exeter’s victory on match-day one was a pleasing one.

From an attacking point of view, Matt Taylor’s men weren’t overly exuberant, but they still created slightly more than their opponents, as an expected goal difference of +0.31 suggests, while they restricted their opponents to reasonably low-quality chances, conceding just 0.69 expected goals.

Ahead of this match, the pair are reasonably closely matched in the betting, which isn’t too surprising. Stevenage were much poorer than Exeter on match-day one, but the pair both challenged for the play-offs last term, so a lack of disparity in pricing was always likely. At the current prices, neither side make much appeal.

In truth, from a betting point of view, this is one of the less appealing games on offer in Leagues One and Two this weekend. Those looking for a way in can try ‘Both Teams to Score – NO’. It’s very early days, so both teams suddenly springing into attacking life is far from out of the question, though if last week is anything to go by, a lack of goals could be on the cards. On match-day one, Stevenage created next to nothing, as they registered just two shots on target and delivered a measly 0.24 expected goals for. Exeter weren’t as bad, but they were far from flamboyant in the final third, as they posted a slightly subdued 0.97 expected goals for. The Grecians looked useful at the back too, so backing at least one of this pair to falter in front of goal is an option.
