Switzerland vs Gibraltar Predictions

Switzerland were held to a 1-1 draw away at Group D leaders the Republic of Ireland in midweek which maintained their unbeaten start to the qualifiers but leaves them sitting outside the automatic qualifying spots. Gibraltar made it four defeats, no goals scored, and twelve conceded when they were beaten 6-0 at home by Denmark on Thursday evening.

All of the stats point towards a big win for Switzerland on Sunday against a Gibraltar side that carries a minimal goal threat and leaks goals on a regular basis.

Switzerland have won two of their last six international matches, which isn’t great form, but Gibraltar have lost each of their last seven games and have only managed to score in one of those matches. Over 5.5 goals were scored in two of Switzerland’s last six matches, a 3-3 draw with Denmark and a 5-2 win over Belgium, while Gibraltar conceded six goals against Denmark in midweek, against Armenia in November 2018, and against Estonia a year earlier, all of which were at home, so nobody is holding out much hope for the visitors on Sunday.

Switzerland have only failed to score in one of their last six matches, against England, while Gibraltar haven’t scored in any of their last six matches, which suggests the hosts are almost certain to keep a clean sheet and win Sunday’s match but the real question is just how many the Swiss will score.

Gibraltar have lost each of their last four home games and their last three games on the road, while Switzerland have only lost one of their last four away games and put six goals past Iceland last year at home in the Nations League. Shaqiri will be missed by the hosts this weekend but Seferović had a great season with Benfica and has netted 17 times for his country, while Granit Xhaka provides a goal threat from midfield, and Newcastle United defender Schar has eight international goals in 51 appearances.

We’re confident that Switzerland will win and over 5.5 goals will be scored in the process and have predicted a final scoreline of 6-0. It would be a miracle is the hosts dropped points or even conceded a goal in this game and we can’t see either of those things happening on Sunday. Switzerland have by far the better team even without Shaqiri and Gibraltar have regularly conceded six goals over the last couple of years and rarely score goals, especially away from home against quality opposition.
