USA vs Jamaica Predictions

Home advantage crucial for Stars and Stripes

The USA navigated the CONCACAF Gold Cup group stages with three wins in three games and now face a tricky Jamaica side in the quarter-finals in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Stars and Stripes opened their account with a 1-0 win over Haiti, then thumped Martinique 6-1 before a narrow 1-0 success over Canada.  

Jamaica began the tournament with back-to-back wins over Suriname and Guadeloupe before losing to Costa Rica in their final group game when they had already secured a spot in the knockout stages.  The Reggae Boys won their first two games by one-goal margins, but were arguably unlucky to lose to Los Ticos having dominated for large periods.

The USA are the favourites and with home advantage as the host nation we feel they should be able to get the job done in 90 minutes. The USA did win 4-1 in a friendly between the two teams earlier this year but Jamaica shouldn’t be underestimated and this competitive match-up could be a lot closer.  Jamaica do have some talent within their squad, most notably Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey, and have enjoyed some recent success against their opponents with two wins in the last five meetings, losing the other three.

Bailey missed the game against Costa Rica as coach Theodore Whitmore opted not to risk him due to a yellow card he picked up against Guadeloupe but should be back in the starting XI against the Americans.  

The USA do have four clean sheets in their last nine games (W8, L1) but the Reggae Boys carry a goal threat and we feel they should at least be able to grab a goal.  The host nation are yet to really hit top form as well, so a 2-1 win for the USA looks a strong option in the correct score market.
