Wellington Phoenix looked to be sparking some sort of a resurgence a few weeks ago when they won three matches in a period of five games, and it looked unlikely, but doable, that they would reach the playoff spots.

However, back to back defeats against Perth Glory and Melbourne City have seen them fall an insurmountable 12 points adrift of the last of the playoff positions, and they are now unlikely to finish above 8th position. At home they have lost four of their last five matches as well, and only won one of their last seven.

Melbourne Victory certainly won’t have been expecting a battle for 6th position in the A-League this season, but that is what they have gotten. The A-League champions have had a disappointing season that has seen them fail to make their mark like they did last term, but a win on Saturday would at least cement their playoff position ahead of last season’s runners up Sydney FC.

Things at the top of the table are tight, but the seven point gap between them and leaders Melbourne City is insurmountable with just two games remaining, and the highest they can potentially reach now is 3rd position.

They did manage to beat title challengers Western Sydney Wanderers last Friday though, with that being just their second win in their last seven games. To be fair to them, they have only lost one of their last eight.
