Wigan vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

  • Wigan have lost 6 of their last 7 clashes with Sheffield Wednesday.
  • The Latics have lost 4 of their 6 top-half clashes at home this season.
  • Sheffield Wednesday have a 100% record against the bottom 5 so far.
  • The visitors have claimed 67% of their wins against the bottom 10.

Wednesday Cup & Running

Sheffield Wednesday produced the perfect response on Friday night, claiming a 2-1 win at QPR in the FA Cup. That victory saw them get back on track following their latest Championship defeat, but the Owls need a win on Tuesday to boost their playoff hopes. The visitors are only four points off the top six despite some poor form, while this is a great chance to pick up three points.

Wigan Woes

Last season saw Wigan stay up by virtue of their home record, with some excellent results at their own ground cancelling out dire away form. However, this time around the Latics are simply poor all round. Wigan are winless in seven home league matches (D3 L4) and that has pushed them into the danger zone.

Things aren’t likely to get much better for the home side on Tuesday night. Wigan have lost six of their last seven league games against Sheffield Wednesday. On top of that, the hosts have lost 15 of 28 league games this term, while they’ve been beaten in four of their six home clashes with top half sides. Given Wednesday’s record against the smaller sides and their win in the reverse fixture, things don’t look good for the Latics.

Wednesday’s Minnow Might

The Owls have built their strong season on the back of great results against the sides at the foot of the table. For instance, each of the bottom three have already lost at Wednesday this season. The visitors have a 100% record against the bottom five, while they have secured 67% of their league wins against the bottom 10 teams.

That even extends to the manager, who has made a habit out of picking off the strugglers. He has done that successfully against Wigan in the past, as Garry Monk is unbeaten in all five league meetings with Wigan Athletic as a manager (W2 D4), winning the reverse fixture in October. We expect him to complete the double here, with an away win our tip for this clash.

Wigan have scored the fewest home league goals of any side in the Championship this season (12). Indeed, the top-scoring player at the DW Stadium this season is George Puscas, who netted a hat-trick against Wigan for Reading there back in November. That suggests this will be low scoring, with a 2-0 Wednesday win our correct score pick in this clash.
