Wolfsburg vs Real Madrid Predictions
German club Vfl Wolfsburg entered new territory this season having reached the Champions League knockout stage for the first time ever, after finishing top of Group B in the group stages. Wolfsburg overpowered the reigning Belgian Pro League champions KAA Gent in their round-of-16 matchup, beating them 3-2 in their first leg away from home and securing a place in the final eight with another win, 1-0 at home, in the second leg. Wolfsburg now face what may be their biggest challenge in club history, as they host Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid in the quarter-final stage.
Real Madrid are unbeaten in this years Champions League competition and have looked dominant throughout. They have won seven from eight games in the competition so far, with the 0-0 draw at PSG in the group stages being the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record. Carrying the momentum of their huge El Clasico victory over domestic rivals FC Barcelona last Saturday, and 6 straight wins in all competitions, the Madrid giants are overwhelming favourites to beat Wolfsburg in this match.
Wolfsburg may have played an solidly impressive Champions League campaign so far, but their general form elsewhere in the Bundesliga has been far from stellar. Wolfsburg aren’t the same threat that they were when they finished second place last season in the Bundesliga. They have been inconsistent and an extensive injury list has often prevented them from fielding a full strength team in crucial matches, as will be the case this Wednesday. Real Madrid had a few bumps along the road this season under ex-manager Rafael Benitez, but have been in excellent form since Zinedine Zidane took over in January. Real Madrid dominated against Roma in the round of 16 a few weeks back, winning 2-0 both home and away, and are certainly likely to continue this trend on paper against an out-of-form Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg may be performing on the highest stage the club has ever achieved, but their team just doesn’t have the same quality as Real Madrid’s household names Christiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez. Combining the above analysis and statistics below expect Real Madrid to run riot in the fist leg of this matchup and a Real Madrid win of 3-0 at 12/1 to be a likely outcome.
