Wolves vs Wigan Predictions

Wolves currently have a 6 point cushion on the drop-zone and should have enough quality to survive quite comfortably but a slip-up here might just get them looking over their shoulder. Wigan really need to find some form and there have been positive signs from them since the turn of the year that suggest they will pose their opponents a few problems here.

Certainly they’ve looked much more lively in the final third in recent weeks. They were incredibly active in January and come into this match having scored twice in 4 of their last 5 league games. They’ve been better on the road in any case this term and have scored 1.07 goals per match away, compared to just 0.93 overall. Up against a Wolves side that have conceded a worrying 1.64 goals per game at home compared to only 1.37 overall, there is strong reason to think an away goal is likely.

Only Wigan have picked up fewer points at home than Wolves, so they’ve not exactly been loving life at Molineux this season. Given this is the second leg of a curious run of 5 consecutive home games for the Black Country outfit, now would be a good time to improve on that. They’ve conceded in 79% of their home league games but have looked better in the final third under Paul Lambert. Both teams have scored in 4 of their last 5 matches in all competitions and in 57% of their games overall this season in the league.

There could be some rotation here from them with an FA Cup tie against Chelsea to come at the weekend. They are likely to be more positive than they were against Newcastle on Saturday and record signing Helder Costa could have a big role to play. He has netted in 5 of his last 11 appearances and should get more space in this game than he did at the weekend, so backing Helder Costa to score anytime at 7/4 looks good.

Wigan have been more positive in recent matches and seem to have realised they need wins to stay in this league. With Wolves poor at home they may see this as a game they could win, so we should see a relatively open game with both teams targeting maximum points and backing both teams to score at 5/6 could be the value bet.
