AFC Wimbledon vs Coventry Predictions

Wimbledon got their season off to a flyer last weekend, as they returned home from Fleetwood with all three points in the bag. With that result under their belt, the London club will be hoping to continue moving forward when they welcome Coventry to Kingsmeadow on Saturday afternoon.

If Joey Barton’s post-match interview was to be taken as fact, then Fleetwood didn’t deserve to lose against AFC Wimbledon, though that’s not the case. While the Dons weren’t impeccable for the entirety of the contest, they were the better team overall, especially offensively.

Against Fleetwood last time out, Neal Ardley’s men were typically useful at the back; they denied their opponent any real clear-cut opportunities by getting men behind the ball and remaining disciplined defensively – qualities that eventually saved them from relegation last season. What’s more, Wimbledon offered a real threat going forward, especially on the break. In fact, had Kwesi Appiah had his shooting boots on, then the visitors would have walked away with a far greater victory, such was their chances to wrap things up. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to call Fleetwood’s keeper one of the best players on the pitch, even though he was on the losing team.

In contrast, Coventry came off second best last weekend, as they went down by two goals to nil on home soil. However, as is often the case, the result doesn’t exactly tell us the full story. Coventry dominated the match in terms of possession, shots, shots on target and indeed chances created. Had they shown that bit more quality in the final third, or had they avoided leaving themselves exposed at the back on a couple of occasions, Coventry would’ve probably walked away with an opening-day victory.

Even against a reasonably sturdy back-line like the one Neal Ardley has assembled at Kingsmeadow, Coventry ought to be capable of causing problems, though their success on Saturday will depend on whether they adopt a more defensive approach or not. If the visitors go to attack, then they ought to create, much as they did last week, though they will inevitably leave themselves open against a team who tend to favour playing on the break.

Both teams offered a threat last weekend, though it was Wimbledon who looked far stronger at the back. Even on their own patch, the Dons won’t mind being patient and waiting for opportunities on the break, and if Coventry set up as they did last week, those opportunities will certainly arise.

At the prices, ‘Wimbledon to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’ stands out as the best option. The hosts are never likely to try and batter teams, as they know that their primary strength lies in keeping teams out. Against a team who looked very open last weekend, the hosts are backed to soak up the pressure before striking on the break on route to a relatively low-scoring victory.
