AFC Wimbledon vs Walsall Predictions

Wimbledon’s strong start to the season continued at the weekend, as they drew 0-0 away against a Barnsley side that had started the campaign in rampant fashion. With another good result behind them, Neal Ardley’s men will be hoping to resume winning ways when they welcome Walsall to Kingsmeadow on Tuesday evening.

After their first two matches, where they defended stoutly, gave little away and earned a collective total of four points, Wimbledon were very much second favourites against a Barnsley team who’d made a quick start to the campaign, though Neal Ardley’s men once again proved tough to pass. They may have offered a limited threat going forward, but a clean sheet away at Oakwell is likely to prove a rarity over the coming months, so the Dons can be very pleased with their match-day three efforts.

After their 0-0 draw at Oakwell, Wimbledon are one of two teams in League One to have avoided conceding this season. As far as their performance against Barnsley goes, Wimbledon didn’t go without conceding chances completely, though they limited the hosts to fewer scoring opportunities than anyone else has done this season.

Like their hosts, Walsall have also made a pleasing start to the campaign. They went into Saturday’s game with Gillingham as one of the most threatening teams of the season in terms of chances created, and as they scored twice and came out on top, Dean Keates’ men remain one of the most impressive offensive sides in the division.

Scoring goals against the likes of Plymouth and Gillingham, teams who’re generally quite open is one thing, though breaching one of the most organised sides in the division, a team who’re yet to concede a single goal, will be much tougher.

From a betting point of view, a case could be made for either team; the hosts could be fancied because they’ve offered more defensively, while there will be those who fancy Walsall to come out on top thanks to extra quality in the final third. However, the fact that the visitors have been poor at the back could be telling. On their own patch, Wimbledon will be tough to break down, so if they can bide their time, scoring opportunities shouldn’t be too hard to come by against a Walsall team who’ll certainly give plenty away.

Keeping goals out rather than scoring them is what Wimbledon are generally about, though they showed that they can create chances against open teams when they beat Fleetwood on the opening day. Consider that in conjunction with the fact that Walsall haven’t been great at the back this season and ‘Wimbledon to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ becomes an attractive proposition, especially at the prices.
