Antwerp vs Club Brugge Predictions

Antwerp are yet to concede in the league this season, but on Sunday they play host to a Club Brugge side that have won all of their opening three games. The home side have won two of their opening three games and drawn one, but they haven’t played anyone near the standard of Club Brugge.

Antwerp travelled to Royal Excel Mouscron last weekend and condemned their hosts to a third straight defeat courtesy of a late Owusu strike. Mouscron had already been beaten by KV Oostende and Club Brugge before they faced in form Antwerp, and the visitors didn’t give the home side an inch during the ninety minutes.

Antwerp ended the game with 62% of the overall possession and limited their hosts to one corner, one shot off target and none on target. The visitors only needed to convert one of their five shots on target to win the game, but they left it until the eighty-first minute when Owusu finished-off a neat pass from Juklerød.

That win moved Antwerp onto seven points from a possible nine and consisted of their third straight clean sheet. The biggest problem for Antwerp this season is going to be goals, especially against the bigger, more established teams of the Belgian top flight.

William Owusu is the only striker in the Antwerp squad to have scored into double figures in league goals in a single season, but the one and only time he achieved that was during the 2014/15 season. Three clean sheets from Sunday’s hosts suggests that Antwerp might not need to worry about goals too much, but they defensive record is bound to be put to the test by Brugge this weekend.

Club Brugge sit joint top of the league alongside Anderlecht on nine points, and will be aiming to maintain their 100% record with victory in Antwerp on Sunday. The visitors goal difference already reads plus seven and their defence has managed to keep two clean sheets in the first three games suggesting that the champions are in the mood to reclaim their title this season.

Kortrijk provided the opposition last weekend, but ended up easily beaten despite having the lions share of the overall possession. Two goals inside the first ten minutes from Danjuma set Club Brugge on their way to a third league win on the run, with Schrijvers adding a third goal shortly before the hour mark to end any hopes the visitors had of a late comeback.

Former Middlesbrough striker Vossen has scored three goals in three games for Brugge this season, but the visitors will be without Brazilian forward Wesley who has scored twice in the league, as the South American is suspended.

We’re backing Club Brugge to show their class with a win to nil over Antwerp on Sunday, with the final score ending 1-0 to the visitors. Club Brugge have won four of their last five matches against Antwerp and each of those wins have been accompanied by a clean sheet. Club Brugge have won five of their last six matches and kept three clean sheets, while Antwerp have only scored two goals in their last three matches.
