Villans set for another entertaining home win

Aston Villa have had the wobbles since the turn of the year but they remain in pole position to finish in the Premier League’s top four and can strengthen their claims with an entertaining home win over Nottingham Forest.

The Villans went into last weekend’s trip to Fulham having dropped points in five of their last seven league matches, but a brace from top scorer Ollie Watkins inspired them to a vital 2-1 victory.

Unai Emery’s side were once being talked up as potential title candidates but their dip in form means they have their work cut out to finish in the top four, with Tottenham and Manchester United hot on their heels and awaiting a mistake.

So a slip up at home to Forest, who are still in grave relegation danger despite last weekend’s 2-0 win at home to West Ham, could be dangerous.

Villa have suffered back-to-back home league defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle but they had triumphed in nine of their opening ten outings at Villa Park, which includes victories over Arsenal and Manchester City.

Hosts proving less reliable defensively

But defensive injuries have intensified and that has been having an impact on their performances with only two clean sheets in their last nine league games.

In fact, both teams have scored in nine of Villa’s last 11 league matches on home soil which should provide an improving Forest side with plenty of hope.

The Tricky Trees still have a task on to secure top-flight survival but last weekend’s victory against the Hammers moved them four points clear of the relegation zone.

With only two wins in 12 away league games this season, Forest evidently need more to upstage the hosts at Villa Park.

Forest capable of making presence felt

However, that means they have failed to score in only one of their last ten league games with star striker Taiwo Awoniyi getting rewarded with some excellent service from Anthony Elanga, Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Both teams have now scored in eight of Forest’s last ten league matches and, given the attacking talent on show, that looks the likely scenario once more.

But Villa, usually so reliable on their own patch and having to fight off their top-four challengers, can prevail with a fourth 3-1 home league win of the season being the preferred scoreline.
