Aston Villa vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

Aston Villa got their chase for the play-offs on course, as they claimed a victory over Rotherham in midweek. They have a great chance to build on that form this week, as they prepare to face Sheffield Wednesday. The hosts are looking to move past their recent struggles and get a push for the top six going, after receiving new investment in the summer which has kept the club competitive. Can they now secure three points when the Owls visit this weekend, or are we going to see another setback at home for the Villains?

Villa needed their victory over Rotherham, and that comfortable 2-0 win has eased any issues for Steve Bruce and his side. The club are seeing an overhaul behind the scenes, with big changes being made in terms of their backroom staff. With the majority of those coming in the scouting department, that’s bound to see the new owners look to a new method of strengthening the first team in the transfer windows to come. However, Bruce already has plenty of talent at his disposal, and their six game run without a win saw them underperform.

Sheffield Wednesday saw a great upturn in form brought to an end, as a three game winning streak in the Championship ended at home to Stoke last weekend. They drew 2-2 with the Potters, and a 2-1 loss at Nottingham Forest followed that draw. The Owls are now back to square one, and they’re starting to look wildly inconsistent. They’ve had their issues on the road so far, having lost three of their last four trips. Are they heading for another loss on Saturday?

Villa’s home form this season has been solid overall. They’ve claimed two wins, and they’ve been unlucky in their two draws. They dominated their clash with Reading, while they impressed against Brentford, and managed to disrupt the Bees’ approach. Their slump against Reading came when Villa had limited attacking options, but they showed the strength in depth they now have in the midweek win over Rotherham. Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham joined Jonathan Kodjia in a front two, flanked by Anwar El Ghazi and Jack Grealish. Albert Adomah came off the bench in that clash, while Yannick Bolasie scored in his sub appearance.

Villa’s new found attacking strength should see them punish a poor Sheffield Wednesday defence. However, the hosts have conceded in three of their four home games this term, while both teams have scored in seven of their eight matches in the Championship this season. The Owls have seen both teams score in eight of their last nine Championship outings, and as a result we’re backing BTTS in this clash, along with a 2-1 home win.
