Athletic Bilbao to Win

Reason for tip

Athletic Bilbao have not suffered a home defeat since they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid on August 12 and they should be confident having scored at least twice in 13 of their last 14 games on their own patch, so take them to win this one

Athletic Bilbao 2-0

Reason for tip

Atletico Madrid have won one of their last eight away games and look set for a struggle, so this could be a repeat of the 2-0 defeat they suffered at San Memes in December

Athletic Bilbao vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

  • Athletic Bilbao have not lost at home since August 12
  • Athletic have scored at least twice in 13 of their last 14 home matches
  • Atletico Madrid have won one of their last eight league away games

San Memes proving a tough place to visit

It is fifth against fourth in the Copa del Rey on Thursday and it looks as if the visitors Atletico Madrid will find it tough to topple their hosts, Athletic Bilbao.

The home side should be full of confidence after consistently proving their ability on their own patch and they could easily force their way into the Champions League places when they return to La Liga action.

But for now they should boost their cup credentials and confidence should not be an issue after they knocked out Barcelona in extra-time in the last round, eventually winning 4-2.

They have not been beaten on their own patch since Real Madrid left with a 2-0 win in their opening home game of the campaign, and these other visitors from the capital could find a win beyond them from their trip north.

Atletico are struggling on the road

While Athletic have shown their home prowess, Atletico are struggling on the road and have posted just one victory in their last eight games on their travels.

They were expected to make light work of their trip to Almeria at the weekend, a team marooned at the bottom of the table, but they were held to a 2-2 draw.

This away game is plainly tougher and after they suffered a 2-0 defeat at San Memes on their last visit in December and their hosts have kept five clean sheets in their last eight home games, a repeat of that screline would not be a surprise
