      Ayr vs Ross County Predictions

Ayr United will welcome league leaders Ross County on Friday to Somerset Park as the sides continue to make their way to the Scottish Premiership. Can United shock the Staggies?

With the league title now mathematically out of their reach, Ayr United will now be looking to seal their place in the Championship play-offs, as a single point would put them out of reach of Dunfermline Athletic, who are looking to make it into the play-off places.

The Honest Men’s electric start to the season soon dampened as the months went by, and the League One winners slowly lost the top spot. 2019 has been disappointing as a whole for the club and Ian McCall’s side has only won 4 games so far this year, as well as earning 2 draws. Their inconsistency has seen the Ayrshire club slip down into lower positions, albeit still within the promotion places. Moreover, a narrow 1-0 defeat to non-league side Auchinleck Talbot saw a very early exit for the club.

Ayr’s form has been better this last month, with McCall’s team picking up 7 points in their last 4 fixtures, with wins over Dunfermline Athletic and Queen of the South as well as a draw with Greenock Morton, and defeats to Inverness CT and Dundee United.

League leaders Ross County have the title within their reach and it’s now up to the Staggies to seal it, and with 3 games to go it’s looking increasingly likely that the Dingwall side will pull it off. They have a comfortable 6-point lead over Dundee United, and the club’s final 2 games will be against relegation candidates Queen of the South and Falkirk.

Co-managers Steven Ferguson and Stuart Kettlewell have silently guided their side all the way to the top, and they were very much the dark horses at the start of the season. Moreover, they were undefeated up until their 1-0 loss to Dundee United at the start of November and wouldn’t drop 3 points again until the new year when they suffered 2 in a row.

A couple of months would pass until they would lose again, and the club is now on a 4-game streak without knowing defeat. They defeated rivals Inverness CT 2-1 before securing a 1-1 draw with Dundee United, followed by another win against Dunfermline and then a goalless game with Partick Thistle over the weekend.

With promotion now the only thing Ayr United have left to play for, the Honest Men will want to make life difficult for the league leaders on Friday. Ross County have 2 easier games at the end of the season, so they could even afford to lose here. However, we’re going to back a draw as the final outcome and a 1-1 draw, as both sides won’t want to risk too much as we head into the final stages of the season.
