      AZ Alkmaar vs Excelsior Predictions

AZ moved back into the top six courtesy of an impressive 3-0 victory away at Fortuna Sittard last weekend, and on Saturday they play host to an Excelsior whose poor form of late has seen them slip closer to the relegation zone. Seven places and six points separate the two clubs ahead of kick-off and its the hosts AZ that are the bookmakers are backing to win the game.

Seuntjens opened the scoring in the twelfth minute for AZ in Sittard, and that goal proved enough to separate the two clubs at the interval. Fortuna Sittard created plenty of opportunities, but couldn’t break down their guests resolute defence and paid the ultimate price shortly after the hour mark when Idrissi made it 2-0. With ten minutes left on the clock Til ended any faint hopes of a comeback for the hosts when he scored the visitors third and final goal to secure a much deserved victory for AZ.

Excelsior might have been expecting some backlash from their hosts PSV last weekend, following the end of their 100% record in the Eredivisie the match previous. PSV were relentless going forward against Excelsior with 70% of the possession and twenty-one shots, but at the other end they kept their guests from having a single shot on target in what truly was a one sided game of football. The hosts took the lead through de Jong in the seventeenth minute and two own goals from van der Meer and Mattheij saw the league leaders go 3-0 up. PSV added two more goals in the final ten minutes through Malen and Bergwijn, and de Jong added another in stoppage time to wrap up a 6-0 victory.

The last time AZ and Excelsior met competitively was back in March, where a nineteenth minute own goal from Zwarthoed put the visitors from Alkmaar in front. The games critical moment arrived a minute before the break when AZ doubled their lead through Jahanbakhsh, something Excelsior never recovered from. Messaoud did manage to pull a goal back for the hosts in the sixty-fourth minute, but AZ held firm in the final stages of the match to secure all three points.

Idrissi top scores for the hosts with six league goals this season, while Messaoud leads the way in front of goal for Excelsior with five Eredivisie goals. The hosts head into the game as the clear form favourites with four wins in their last six matches, while Excelsior have been in polar opposite form with four defeats in their last six.

We’re confident that AZ will win to nil on Saturday, and have backed the final score to end 2-0. AZ have a 53% win ratio against Excelsior, and the hosts have won four of their last six matches in league and cup. Excelsior have lost four of their last six matches, but more worryingly for the visitors is AZ’s record of four clean sheets in their last six matches.
