It’s early days in this Swiss Super League with this Saturday’s match between Basel and Sion part of the fourth round of fixtures. Basel have been the real powerhouse in Swiss football over the past decade or so but they were emphatically knocked off their perch by Young Boys last term and they’ve not made the most convincing starts to this season either so there is pressure on them heading into this game.

Basel won the Swiss title for eight seasons running between 2010 and 2017. Therefore it was a huge surprise when they finished a distant 2nd last term, with Young Boys winning the title by a 15 point margin. They would have wanted to send out a statement by making a strong start to this season but they really haven’t done that and already find themselves playing catch up on the defending champions who boast a 100% record.

The side currently closest to Young Boys are Sion who have won 2 of their opening 3 matches. It’s way too early to suggest they will be genuine challengers and they only finished in mid-table last term but they were impressive 3-0 winners over Neuchâtel Xamax last weekend and have had a whole week to prepare for this one unlike Basel who were involved in Europe on Thursday.

They got an excellent result, winning away to Vitesse of the Netherlands and they will hope that is a springboard for their season. They are the favourites here but are perhaps too short to confidently back for the win but goals do look very likely here so backing a high-scoring game makes sense.

Defensive fragility was a big reason why they finally surrendered their title last term and they don’t appear to have fixed that problem with 5 goals conceded in their opening 3 league games this term.
