Bayer Leverkusen 3-1

Reason for tip

Leverkusen have scored three goals or more in eight of their 12 Bundesliga home games and beat Union Berlin 4-0 after their last return trip from Azerbaijan to face Qarabag. However, Wolfsburg rarely concede more than three on the road and usually score themselves.

Leverkusen look to get back into their groove

Bayer Leverkusen’s six-game winning streak was ended by Qarabag on Thursday, but Xabi Alonso’s side should get back into their groove against a struggling Wolfsburg side on Sunday.

Alonso made a raft of changes in midweek, resting the likes of Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Patrik Schick and Piero Hincapie while still seeing his side claim a 2-2 draw in Azerbaijan.

He knew what he was doing, having faced Qarabag in the group stages of the Europa League earlier this season, although his side showed no ill effects of their return that time as they subsequently thrashed Union Berlin 4-0.

Wolfsburg usually wilt – even of they score first

This may be slightly tougher as Wolfsburg, although winless in their last nine games, are a better side now than Union were then. But it is probably still worth supporting Werkself to win handsomely as they have done in seven of their previous 12 home games this season.

Jeremie Frimpong will be missing through suspension, but all of the rested regulars will be back in for this clash as Leverkusen close in on the Bundesliga title. There were no signs of nerves in their play last weekend when they dismissed Cologne 2-0, although there may be a greater chance of that creeping in when they play in front of their own fans.

It will be interesting to see how they cope if Wolfsburg score first in this clash, as they have done in three of their last four away games. But Niko Kovac’s side have not won any of those games and will surely be worn down by Leverkusen’s classy play eventually.
