Benfica vs Lyon Predictions

It’s safe to say that Benfica haven’t had the best of times in the Champions League so far this season. In what looked to be a wide open group, the Portuguese giants have lost both their opening two matches and find themselves rooted to the bottom of the group. It now looks like an uphill battle for them to qualify for the latter stages, and that battle starts on Wednesday.

Many did expect them to struggle after the big money departure of Joao Felix in the summer, and their performances against RB Leipzig and Zenit were well below par. However, it was actually at the other end of the pitch that they had problems, conceding five times in these two matches.

This will be something that Lyon will look to capitalise on. The Ligue 1 giants have been far from their best so far this season and have only won one of their last 10 competitive games, but their last Champions League outing rekindled some hope among the Lyon fans.

They beat RB Leipzig 2-0 away from home, leaving them joint with Zenit at the top of Group G. Victory on Wednesday could put them in the driving seat as we head for the second half of this Champions League group stage campaign.

Admittedly, their recent record in the Champions League isn’t overly impressive. They have won two, drawn seven, and lost just one of their last 10 outings. However, they are unbeaten in their last 11 group stage matches, and they’re facing a Benfica side with a torrid recent record.

The hosts have lost 12 of their last 15 Champions League games, winning just twice and losing both games this season. Even at home, including qualifiers, they have lost six of their last 11 matches, and we’re expecting Lyon to cause their back line some real problems.

Benfica have conceded at least two goals in 11 of their last 15 Champions League games in the group stages and beyond, while Lyon have netted twice or more in six of their last 10 in the competition. This makes Lyon Over 1.5 Team Goals look excellent value, so we’re backing that.

We don’t fancy the visitors to get a clean sheet though. They have conceded in all but two of these last 10 Champions League games, whilst Benfica have scored in six of their last eight in the competition. They have averaged exactly one goal per game in this period, so we think a 2-1 win for the visitors is a good value offering for the correct score prediction.
