Benfica -2

Reason for tip

Benfica won 3-0 when these two sides met in January, one of 11 victories by three or more goals this term. They host the league’s bottom side who are already relegated having lost 13 of their 16 away trips. With a huge gulf in clash apparent as Benfica look to seal the title, back a heavy home win.

Benfica 4-0

Reason for tip

Saturday pits together the league’s best attack and defence against a Santa Clara side who are ranked in the bottom three in both categories. The visitors have failed to score in 62% of their trips this term, while Benfica will be out to wrap up the title in style.

Benfica vs Santa Clara Predictions

  • Benfica have won by 3+ goals in 11 Primeira Liga games this term
  • That includes a 3-0 win in the reverse meeting
  • Santa Clara are already relegated, losing 13 of 16 away games including all their visits to the top six

Can Santa Clara deliver title-shock?

The Portuguese title race heads to the final day, with Benfica two points clear of old rivals Porto. The Eagles have an 11-goal lead over the Dragons in terms of goal difference, so the outsiders are relying on a massive shock from Santa Clara.

The side from the Azores are making the trip to the mainland knowing they’re already relegated to the second tier. They sit bottom of the table having won just five times in 33 games, suffering 13 defeats across their 16 away trips to date. They’ve picked up a single point against the top six, ironically it was a draw at Porto which could well have decided the title race already.

While Porto will hope that Santa Clara can cause a similar final day shock, it’s hard to see them matching up with the leaders.

Benfica to lift trophy in style

While Porto have clawed their way back into the title race, Benfica have done enough to stay in front over recent weeks. They’ve won four of their last five, fighting back from 2-0 down at Sporting Lisbon last week to claim a vital point.

The Eagles have the best attacking and defensive records in the division, while they host the league’s bottom side on Saturday. The host have already recorded 11 wins by at least three goals this term, including a 3-0 victory in their visit to Santa Clara earlier this year.

The visitors were hammered 5-3 by Braga in their last away trip and they were still fighting for safety at that point. They have nothing to play for in this trip and any ambitions they have to spoil Benfica’s party should be stamped out by the dominant hosts. Back Benfica to cruise to a comfortable final-day win.
