Birmingham vs Aston Villa Predictions

They say that form goes out of the window in a derby, but Aston Villa’s went eight days ago. They make this trip to their neighbours following an impressive 4-0 win over Derby, which could transform the Villains’ campaign. They are aiming to close the six-point gap to the playoffs in the run-in, so they need to claim three points at the eighth-placed Blues, who have ambitions of making the playoffs themselves.

The hosts are just four points off sixth after some decent results in 2019, but they really should be sixth already. The Blues won away at sixth-placed Bristol City last month, a win which showed that they are real playoff contenders. However, they have claimed just four points from their last 12 – including that win over the Robins. They’ve gifted away enough points to make sixth their own, so will the same thing happen here?

Aston Villa will be searching for an away win, as they try to extend their good record against their Second City rivals. They also have the confidence boost of Jack Grealish’s return to the side. The midfielder was a big absentee for Villa. His last six games before injury saw the club claim 14 points from a possible 18, while they scored 19 times. They scored 16 in the 14 games he missed, securing just 13 points. His return at the weekend saw them race into a 4-0 half-time lead over seventh-placed Derby.

That makes Villa a real threat in this trip, especially with Birmingham failing to convince of late. They’ve won just three of their last 12 matches, a run which continued with their 2-0 loss at Hull last weekend. They have failed to win four of their last five here, while they have lost two of their last four at home, after losing only once in the first 13. With the likes of Middlesbrough and Bolton winning here, the high-scoring visitors should be expecting to cause problems.

While Villa have had issues on the road of late, Grealish has been injured through their five-game winless run. Before that, they won three of their last four trips, scoring nine times and keeping three clean sheets. The England hopeful really balances this side, and his presence should boost a side which won the reverse fixture 4-2. Grealish scored in the win over Birmingham at Villa Park, and with Villa winning four and drawing one of their last six against Birmingham, we’re backing the visitors to claim a result here. Villa Draw No Bet is our tip, along with a 2-1 victory.
