Birmingham vs Newcastle Predictions

Newcastle’s shock home defeat last weekend against Fulham has once again put an element of doubt into their automatic promotion hopes. They looked to have done the hard work having won on the road against their main rivals for a top two finish but a couple more lacklustre displays means they could really do with the win here. They have tended to raise their game when needed though this season and their outstanding away record suggests they should be able to come to Birmingham and win.

The Magpies average an excellent 2.21 points per game on the road, which is more than they’ve managed at St James’ Park. 68% of their away league games have ended in victory so they are good value for their status as clear favourites here. Since an unfortunate defeat at Blackburn in their first away game of 2017, Newcastle have taken 14 points from 6 away games, which have included really tough trips to 4 of the other promotion hopefuls.

This should be a game they can grasp control of early on. Rafa Benitez’s side would probably have been grateful for a midweek off, having played a lot of big games in recent weeks and they should come into this game refreshed as a result. Top scorer Dwight Gayle ought to be a bit nearer full fitness too and that could be a deciding factor here. With 21 goals from just 27 Championship appearances this term, backing Gayle to score anytime at 20/21 looks a decent punt.

Birmingham have been fairly woeful at home since Gianfranco Zola took charge. Their 8 home league games under him have produced 6 defeats and only 4 points. They’ve lost 4 of their last 5 home league games coming into this and have now lost 42% of their Championship home games overall. Their problems have been at both ends of the pitch in truth. They’ve only scored 5 home goals since the Italian took charge and have conceded 3 or more home goals on 3 separate occasions under him.

With Newcastle, the division’s top scorers, they should be well equipped to take advantage of that and backing Newcastle to Win at 7/10 looks like the most logical bet here.
