Birmingham vs Wigan Predictions

Birmingham were able to claim a 3-1 win at Rotherham on Monday, which moved them 10 points clear of the drop zone. They’ve secured safety in the second tier this season, as have their opponents this weekend. Wigan were able to claim a victory in their last clash too, which has moved them up to 18th in the league. They’re only a place behind the Blues after that win, so will they be able to leapfrog the Blues by claiming a victory in this trip on Saturday?

The hosts are now unbeaten in their last five matches, which has boosted their form after their drop into danger. They were serious contenders for the playoffs at the start of 2019, but a nine-point deduction sent them into the mix to drop into League One. Last season saw their survival fight go down to the last day, but they secured nine points in a five-match unbeaten run to get away from trouble. With safety secured, they can play with a little more freedom here, as Garry Monk continues to move the Blues forward.

Wigan have dropped close to danger frequently this season, but the Easter weekend proved to be huge for them. They were able to win 2-1 at Leeds – their second away win of the season – before a 2-0 success against Preston on Monday. That’s taken them eight points clear of danger, securing their spot in this division. Now Wigan can look ahead to another Championship campaign, but can they finish up with an away win in their final trip of the campaign?

With 16 defeats in 22 matches on the road this season, the Latics aren’t expected to take the points here. However, it’s hard to back against the side who have won back to back games. The Latics have lost just once in their last seven, while Birmingham have won only one of their last seven at St Andrew’s. The hosts have serious issues at the back, having kept just one clean sheet at this ground since the start of February.

The Blues have let in a goal in 13 of their last 14 matches, so they should struggle against a Wigan side who are growing in confidence. However, the Latics have conceded in 20 trips on the spin, so we’re hardly expecting a clean sheet for the visitors. We’re going with both teams to score as our tip in this one, while we’re also backing the Blues to edge out a 2-1 victory.
