Boca Juniors vs San Lorenzo Predictions

Sunday’s Superliga Argentina derby action sees Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo doing battle at La Bombonera. The hosts arrive as favourites to claim all 3 points and will be looking to do exactly that.

In normal circumstances, with a Copa Libertadores game against Tolima coming up in midweek, Boca would rest their usual starters in this match. Nonetheless, with a place in next year’s edition of the competition still not secured, Sunday’s game is an important one for El Xeneize and as such, most of their regular starters should be fielded.

Third with a 5 point margin for error with just 4 games left to play, Boca should be able to finish in the top 4 with no real issues and a win here would go a long way towards achieving that. Having won 5 of their last 7 home league games, confidence will be high in getting the job done and fans are hopeful of seeing a strong performance against what is one of the side’s biggest rivals.

Meanwhile, San Lorenzo would also normally be resting their usual team for this trip but in their current position, they can ill afford to. Indeed, boos Jorge Almiron still hasn’t won a single match in charge of the team, despite taking over in November and El Ciclon remain rooted to the bottom of the Superliga table, having collected just 17 points from 20 matches.

The season is going down as one of the worst in San Lorenzo history and whilst their squad didn’t look the strongest coming into the campaign, they weren’t expected to struggle this badly. Indeed, a poor result on Sunday would really ramp up the pressure on players and manager alike but having not won any of their last 16 away games, the visitors are clearly not a powerful outfit on their travels and that has their prospects looking bleak on Sunday.

Ultimately, this a match Boca need to be winning and we fully expect them to do so. Man for man, they’re by far a stronger outfit than a San Lorenzo team that is completely devoid of confidence and playing in a very uninspiring manner.

Whilst the price on a straight home win is rather short, there’s still value to be found in backing it to be to nil. Boca have conceded just once in their last 3 matches and with San Lorenzo having failed to score in 4 of their last 5 away games, they’re not expected to cause the hosts many problems in what could well be a 2-0 home win.
