Marko Arnautovic To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Since February, Marko Arnautovic has scored 14 of Bologna’s last 21 Serie A goals. The former Stoke City and West Ham man has also been responsible for six of their seven strikes this term, making him Serie A’s most in-form forward.

Bologna vs Empoli Predictions

  • Bologna have seen both teams score in five of their six Serie A matches this season.
  • Empoli, meanwhile, have seen goals at both ends in each of their last four games.
  • New Bologna boss Thiago Motta oversaw the second-worst defence in Serie A when coaching Spezia last season.

Motta takes over at a good time

While Sinisa Mihajlovic’s sacking may have appeared harsh to some, Bologna were on a five-game winless run when the Serb departed. Fast forward one week, and that run has morphed into a three-match unbeaten sequence, with new coach Thiago Motta having watched from the stands as they beat Fiorentina last time out. The former Barcelona midfielder now appears to be taking over at a good time, with winless Empoli their next opponents.

Bologna’s only defeats of the season have come at Lazio and Milan, and they have given as good as they’ve got in most matches; five of their six Serie A outings this term have contained goals at both ends. Among Serie A sides this campaign, Bologna rank in the top half for possession share, expected goals (xG) created and goals, meaning Motta has plenty to work with as he bids to install a positive style. His Spezia side were particularly leaky last season, however, conceding 71 league goals.

Empoli, meanwhile, remain without a victory under Paulo Zanetti, who led the division’s fourth-worst defensive outfit for most of last season (Venezia, 69 goals against). Empoli were also among Serie A’s most porous outfits last term, and they have struggled to change since the restart; the last four of the Azzurri’s games have contained goals at both ends, and they’ve shipped 12 goals in their last six away games.

Both teams likely to ship

Given the poor defensive records of both sides and the unpredictability that comes with the appointment of a new head coach, backing both teams to score looks the most prudent play for Saturday’s contest.

However, Bologna should have enough about them to seal a 2-1 triumph over the winless visitors, while Marko Arnautovic, Serie A’s top scorer after netting six of Bologna’s seven goals this season (and 14 of their last 21 since February) appears a strong anytime goalscorer play.
