      Bordeaux vs Guingamp Predictions

Bordeaux got a massive win at the weekend against Toulouse as Jimmy Briand’s late winner saw them over the line after they had lost three consecutive league games. This was an extremely moralising win that has lifted them up to 13th with a four point gap over Nantes in 14th. It was a rather scrappy win as Bordeaux played much of the game with their backs against the wall but they simply managed to convert the chances handed to them; Toulouse managed to squander three clear cut opportunities so the game could have gone very differently indeed.

Bordeaux just need to take the positives from this and that’s exactly what managers Ricardo Gomes and Eric Bedouet will be saying to their players. They have a golden chance to make it back-to-back wins but the defence really needs to be sorted out if they want to do so, as they have kept it tight in just one of their last eight games in all competitions. They also failed to score in half of these games but they will hope that the recent acquisition of Sunderland striker Josh Maja can contribute to that side of the game. The Englishman made his first start for the club at the weekend but was largely unimpressive as he had one shot off target and completed just nine passes in his 67 minutes of action.

Guingamp infamously started off the league season with six consecutive losses but they haven’t really learned much from that time as they are currently on a winless run of four matches, with three defeats seeing them firmly remain bottom of the table, five points away from Caen in 19th. Guingamp have to remember that they have faced some tough teams recently with Lille, PSG and Lyon all coming within the last month. Therefore it’s no wonder that they took nothing away from these games.

However, they scored twice against Lyon and managed to beat Monaco on penalties to progress to the final of the Coupe de la Ligue. They have scored four times in their last four games, which is pretty impressive as Lille, Monaco and Lyon have been the opponents. With this match seeing them come up against someone more their size, they should be relishing the opportunity as there is real quality in this side, as Marcus Thuram and Marcus Coco have shown.

Bordeaux have won three of the last four clashes between these teams but with both sides in such dire straits, we think this could be a tight one. Each of the last four fixtures have seen over 2.5 goals and we think that will be the case again, with two horrible defences meeting attacks that are very capable of scoring. Guingamp haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last eleven games and after Bordeaux scored twice at the weekend against better opposition in Toulouse, we’re backing this one to finish 2-1 to the hosts. Bordeaux have only lost one of their last ten home matches but with their defensive record so poor at the moment, we can’t see them keeping a clean sheet against this Guingamp side desperate for points.
