      Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona Predictions

Two giants of European football meet at Signal-Iduna Park this week, as Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona fight it out for top spot in this group. The pair are rivalled by Inter Milan, so this is one of the groups where there is a genuine risk of missing out on the last 16 for a top side. Dortmund could put a cat amongst the pigeons with a victory on the opening day of the group stage, but will they grab a result?

Dortmund came just short of the Bundesliga title last season, while they have started this term with their eye on the prize. They have invested in their squad with the title in mind, which leads to questions over their focus on this competition. Last term there were similar issues for Dortmund once they arrived in the last 16, but could they take their eye off the ball in the opening clash?

Barcelona would surely prey on any side who dropped their guard in a game of this magnitude. The visitors are desperate to win this competition, with Lionel Messi making it their stated aim. There’s also the President’s reelection campaign to consider. His public chase for Neymar in order to win votes has clearly backfired, leaving Barca in need of a statement – such as Champions League success.

Barca have seen Ernesto Valverde suffer two humiliating exits in this competition so far. His team were overturned by Roma in 2018, losing their lead in the quarter-finals at the Stadio Olimpico. That was followed up by their Anfield capitulation earlier this year, which arguably means that Valverde is lucky to still be there. However, he might not be so lucky if he fails in this competition for the third time.

We expect the visitors to kick off in style on Tuesday night. They come into this clash in scoring form, having hit 12 goals across their last 12 matches. They aren’t likely to need too many in this visit to Dortmund, which is likely to produce a tight clash between two sides who are proactive without the ball. Meanwhile, Dortmund’s recent Champions League record casts doubt over their chances here, with the hosts losing three of their last five.

Dortmund have won just twice in their last eight home games in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Barca have lost once in their last 12 games in this competition, winning four of the last five. We expect them to follow up on that form here, especially against a Dortmund team who have issues at the highest level in this competition.

We’re backing a Barca win, while we aren’t expecting much from Dortmund. The hosts have failed to score in four of their last five Champions League games, so we are backing Barca to shut them out and claim a win. An away victory and a 1-0 success for the Catalans are our tips for Tuesday’s tie.
