Uruguay up against it again

Uruguay were ruthlessly dismantled 3-0 by Argentina in Buenos Aires on Sunday and Oscar Tabarez’ ageing side could well be facing another long evening when they square off against runaway leaders Brazil in Manaus.

The Uruguayans had been solid enough throughout the campaign with four wins and just two losses posted from their first ten outings, but they were taught a real lesson by Lionel Messi and co. on Matchday 11.

It’s difficult to see how Celeste can suitably recover from that beating and such a quick turnaround to trouble Brazil this week, with the hosts near perfect in qualifying after nine wins and one draw to date.

Tite’s side were held to a goalless stalemate in Colombia at the weekend, but that result was satisfactory considering their opponents’ recent form and the result did bring up Brazil’s ninth clean sheet of the campaign.

With Uruguay winning just one of their five away trips and failing to net in two of their last three, this fixture screams a comfortable Brazil win to nil, as was the case when the teams met in Montevideo last November.

That 2-0 result marked Brazil’s sixth win in the last seven meetings between the teams and a repeat score-line could well be on the cards in Manaus, with the hosts averaging just over two goals per game in qualifying.
