Bristol City vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

Bristol City welcome Sheffield Wednesday to Ashton Gate on Sunday looking to end a run of four matches without a win. As a result of their recent winless sequence, the Robins have slipped down to 10th in the Championship, just two places ahead of Sheffield Wednesday.

City and Wednesday have collected sixteen points each from their eleven league matches in 2018/19 respectively and both teams are still searching for the kind of consistency that could help them sustain a challenge for a playoff spot this season.

Bristol City drew 0-0 on Wednesday away to Rotherham, securing their second draw inside the space of a few days, having been held at home by Aston Villa. Picking up points in singles isn’t ideal, though its certainly a step in the right direction after successive defeats to Wigan and West Brom.

The Robins will be keen to get back into the sort of flow that saw them win four Championship matches on the bounce between late August and early September and they will fancy their chances of securing maximum points against a Sheffield Wednesday side who have won just one of their last five.

Like City, Wednesday come into Sunday’s fixture off the back of successive draws. Jos Luhukay’ men drew at home to Leeds last week – a result that would have buoyed their confidence considerably, but much of that new self-belief would have been eroded by their mid-week disappointment against West Brom.

Wednesday had raced into an early two-goal lead and they held on to that cushion until the 86th minute of the contest. The Baggies fought back however, scoring twice inside a minute to snatch a point, and though a draw wasn’t the worst result in the world for Wednesday, the manner of the capitulation meant that the tie probably felt more like a defeat.

Bristol City thumped Wednesday 4-0 in last season’s corresponding fixture, which took place as recently as March. Hat-trick hero that day Bobby Reid has since departed, though we think City still have enough quality to beat the Owls again on Sunday.

Wednesday have won on only one of their last eight visits to Ashton Gate, and City are unbeaten in their most recent three matches there, a run that included a 1-0 win over Wednesday’s much stronger Sheffield rivals United.

We do expect the Owls to grab a goal this weekend – Wednesday have found the net in eight straight Championship games and Bristol City have kept just one clean sheet in their last nine league games at Ashton Gate.

With those numbers considered, we recommend taking the home win/both teams to score combination to enhance your odds. This fixture has a recent history of producing goal-filled games – an average of 3.6 goals were scored the last five meetings between the teams. That makes the over 2.5 goal market a great looking option to consider for Sunday’s clash. Finally, our correct score prediction forecasts a 2-1 win for Bristol City.
