      Bristol Rovers vs Luton Predictions

When they equalised late in the day last weekend, Bristol Rovers continued to climb away from the drop-zone, though they were unable to make further headway on Tuesday night, as they were battered by Doncaster at Keepmoat Stadium. Conceding four goals (and scoring just one) isn’t the ideal preparation ahead of a match against the rampant league leaders.

Although the score-line suggested they were on the wrong end of a mauling, Rovers didn’t perform overly poorly on Tuesday evening, or at least they were more in the game than the result would have us believe. While the fact that they emerged from that match with an expected goal difference of just -0.32 doesn’t suggest that they deserved to win, it does tell us that they certainly weren’t deserving of a 4-1 defeat.

Back on their own patch, where they’ve lost just one of their last five, the Pirates will fancy themselves to do better. That said, some of their recent home efforts against top-six opposition suggest that Graham Coughlan’s men could find life tough against the Hatters. Last time out, though they were not beaten, Rovers struggled to get going against Charlton, as they clocked just 0.77 expected goals for, while they were recently brushed aside by Sunderland at this venue. On that occasion, they also failed to find the net, as they posted a rather weak 0.64 expected goals for.

Disappointingly, Rovers have won none of their four home games against teams currently in the top six, while they’ve lost three of those four. Against top-six sides at home, they’ve scored just twice and have conceded eight.

While Rovers have found it somewhat tough to get going against the better teams at home, Luton have found it easy to get the better of pretty much anybody away from home. The Hatters have the third best away record in the division, while they’re now unbeaten in 12 on their travels, eight of which they’ve won.

The fact that Luton have conceded an average of just 0.89 goals away from home suggests that teams have struggled to get going offensively against Mick Harford’s title hopefuls, as does the fact that they’ve recently shipped figures of just 0.23, 0.56 and 0.7. Luton have now conceded just two goas in their last six on the road, so a Bristol Rovers side that has struggled offensively against the better teams could be in for another tough afternoon.

To be completely honest, regardless of how you look at this fixture, it’s impossible to say that Luton aren’t considerably better than Bristol Rovers. Even away from home, the Hatters have looked a much stronger side than the Pirates have on home soil.

From a betting point of view, the angle of attack is ‘Luton to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’. For all they’re a strong attacking side, Luton have adopted a more pragmatic approach on their travels of late, as they’ve nullified teams before making them pay at the other end. Consider this in conjunction with the fact that Rovers have struggled to make offensive headway against the better sides and it’s easy to side with the visitors to obtain a routine win.
