Cambridge United vs Newport County Predictions

The opening day of the season was always going to spring some surprises, but for those sides who turned in a performance when they were perhaps expected to be humbled last weekend, this Saturday represents an opportunity to prove that the result they accomplished was not just a one off. One of those sides is Cambridge United and this weekend they welcome a Newport County side who will be looking to right the wrongs of their frustrating draw on the opening weekend.

Cambridge United will have been delighted to open their account with a point last weekend as they came up against a side we have tipped to go all the way and win the League 2 title this season, Bradford City. The hosts had to withstand large periods of pressure in that fixture and were perhaps grateful that City were not exactly on their game up top as they spurned chance after chance. However, that should not take away from the resolute performance United displayed at the back and they will feel that a point and a clean sheet was exactly what they deserved after a hard fought 90 minutes.

Making the trip to the Abbey Stadium is a Newport County side who will be frustrated with their exploits in the opening fixture. Although they will have likely settled for a point against a fellow promotion contender at the start of the days play, they led Mansfield Town 2-0 at the half time break before being pegged back. A slow start to the second stanza will no doubt be highlighted in the team meeting ahead of this fixture, so you should expect the visitors to come out strong after the half time break.

County are undoubtedly the stronger side here and they will go into this fixture fully expecting to earn the three points. They have an excellent record in the head to head between these two sides having won the previous five encounters and given that their hosts were barely able to muster any attacking play last weekend, we cannot make a case for the hosts earning the victory. With this in mind, backing an away win looks like the best bet on offer in this fixture.

If the visitors are to emerge victorious then striker Padraig Amond will most likely have to have a positive impact. The Irishman opened his account for the season from the penalty spot last time out and given that he scored 15 times for Newport last season, he looks like a good bet to find the back of the net any time against Cambridge this Saturday.
