Cambuur Leeuwarden vs NEC Nijmegen Predictions

Cambuur made a highly promising start to 2019 with draws against Sparta Rotterdam (3-3) and Go Ahead Eagles (1-1) earned either side of a 0-1 success at Helmond Sport, but progress came to a grinding halt for Rene Hake’s charges last Monday as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Jong AZ.  The Leeuwarden outfit will be keen to put that result to bed on match day 24, but they face a tough battle at Cambuurstadion against an NEC side who gained a much needed victory last Friday.

Rene Hake will have been seething at his side’s performance in Alkmaar last week; Cambuur turned in a dismal display at AFAS Stadion which didn’t appear forthcoming following some decent results in January.

The loss epitomised what has been a frustrating campaign overall for Cambuur, who keep bouncing out of the Play-off spots as soon as they find a way back in.

Their eighth defeat of the season, combined with yet further victories for FC Eindhoven and RKC on match day 23, sees the Leeuwarden side drop down to 11th heading into this week’s home clash with NEC, and they now have a two point deficit to make up on those teams.

And if Cambuur are to reach the top nine come the end of the season, they’ll need to swiftly improve their home form which has nosedived over the past few weeks.

Hake’s charges won five of their first six outings in Leeuwarden this term, but they take on NEC here seeking a first victory in six in front of their own supporters.

That will give NEC a great deal of encouragement, in addition to what they gleaned from a 4-1 success against Jong Utrecht last week.

The signing of Ferdy Druijf from AZ Alkmaar was easily the best bit of transfer business done by any Eerste Divisie club in the January transfer window, and the 20-year-old has quickly hit the ground running for Jack De Gier’s side.

Druijf blasted in a hat-trick to put Jong Utrecht to the sword within 45 minutes, and things are gradually looking up for NEC who earned 1-1 draws with Oss and Telstar in the fortnight previous.

It’s been a miserable campaign overall for the pre-season promotion favourites, but the Nijmegen club are only a handful of points adrift of the Play-offs, and could put a run together now with the prolific Druijf in their arsenal.

Based on their signs of life and Cambuur’s recent woes in Leeuwarden, we’re taking a chance on the visitors for this Friday’s clash, which should be another entertaining affair following the 2-2 draw played out between the teams on the opening night of the season.

NEC had the best of things in that one only to let a two goal lead slip late in the day, but we fancy them to confirm superiority this week with a 1-2 victory at Cambuurstadion.
