Cambuur Leeuwarden vs Twente Predictions

Cambuur gained their first win in five on match day 17 as they ran out 1-2 winners over Jong PSV in Eindhoven, but their recovery may be short lived as they prepare to take on Twente this Friday, a club they’ve never beaten. Can Rene Hake’s side land a maiden success over the Enschede outfit, or will Marino Pusic’s team justify favouritism in Leeuwarden?

Cambuur endured a fairly torrid November with just five points gained from five matches, but their first outing in December was a positive one as goals from Kevin Schindler and Robin Maulun secured an impressive 1-2 success against 8th placed Jong PSV at De Herdgang.

Rene Hake’s side climbed up to 11th in the table following that result and are back in touching distance of the Play-off places, but they have a real test on their hands this Friday as Twente make the trip to Cambuurstadion.

Cambuur have never beaten the Enschede outfit, losing nine of their previous 13 competitive meetings, and Marino Pusic’s men returned to form last week with a 1-2 victory away at Volendam.

The three points pushed Twente back to 4th in the standings where they sit just four points behind leaders Den Bosch, and they have a formidable record on the road this season.

Twente have won five of their eight away games, losing just once, and only Den Bosch have a better points to games ratio on their travels.

The fact that Twente have lost five of their 17 league matches overall  this term makes them far from invincible, but most of their problems have come at De Grolsch Veste which has not been the fortress many expected this season.

Cambuur have themselves performed with great credit in their own back yard, banking five wins and a draw from their eight fixtures in Leeuwarden, but it’s worth noting that the best team they’ve beaten at home, in terms of the current league standings, is 9th placed Jong Ajax.

Their two home defeats against Roda JC and FC Eindhoven suggest that more losses will be suffered in Leeuwarden as better teams start visiting Cambuurstadion, and this week’s clash with Twente could well start proving that notion.

Punters will rightly feel a bit reluctant to support Twente at a touch off odds-on based on some of the disappointments they’ve had this season, but on their day they look a class apart from the majority of the teams in the second tier.

And considering they’re only four points off the top despite losing five games already, they’ll probably be feeling quite good about their current position and fully focused on challenging for automatic promotion from here on in.

So it’s an away win for us in this one, and we confidently predict that history will repeat itself between these two clubs. There may not be too much in it early on, but we expect Twente to assert in the second half and 1-3 is our predicted scoreline.
