Caracas vs Sport Huancayo Predictions

Tuesday’s Copa Sudamericana action features a second round, first leg clash between Venezuelans Caracas and Peruvians Sport Huancayo. The hosts will be looking to establish an advantage to take into the second leg.

The fact Caracas are even still in the competition certainly ranks as a good achievement. Los Rojos del Avila crashed out at the first round stage of the competition last season, falling to defeat against Paraguayans Cerro Porteno, but they’ve already caused something of an upset this year, eliminating Chileans Everton on away goals in a tie they were expected to lose.

Now facing an opponent that certainly looks beatable, Caracas’ fans will surely be dreaming of putting together a rare continental run. The hosts haven’t been in competitive action since last month, in which they made it to the semi-finals of the opening stage of the league but will be looking to continue what was fairly strong form prior to the mid-season break into this one; having won 9 of their last 15 matches overall.

Meanwhile, Sport Huancayo also eliminated Chilean opposition unexpectedly in the first round, drawing 0-0 away at Union Espanola, prior to hammering them 3-0 on home soil with the use of their high altitude advantage when playing as hosts.

Like Caracas, Huancayo also fell at the first hurdle last season, going out against Bolivians Nacional Potosi, whilst they also went out at this very stage back in 2016, so will be hoping to go one further in this particular tie. Huancayo haven’t been in competitive action since last month either but away performances were a concern prior to the break, having lost 4 of the last 7 on the road overall, a sequence that has to be considered a worry ahead of this trip to Venezuela.

Ultimately, it’s fairly clear what type of match to expect. Huancayo are not going to push many men forward and will show little attacking intention, with staying in the match prior to the second leg, which they will be huge favourites in, the priority.

This is a match Caracas simply have to win if they are to harbour hopes of progressing and all things considered, we believe they will be able to, with backing the home win the way to play. Huancayo are far from convincing on the road in their domestic matches and their Sudamericana away record is even worse, having lost 5 of their last 6 games on enemy territory in the competition. A 1-0 Caracas win looks the most likely scoreline and is one worth backing in combination with our main pick.
