      Celtic vs Airdrieonians Predictions

Reigning champions Celtic will host League One side Airdrieonians at Celtic Park on Saturday. Can the hosts cause an upset?

Last season’s Scottish FA Cup winners Celtic return to action after their winter break. Brendan Rodgers’ side ended the year on a low following their 1-0 defeat to Rangers in the Old Firm derby- the Hoops’ first loss to their arch rivals in over seven years.

However, the Glasgow club still find themselves at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, with Rangers level on points and Kilmarnock behind them both by one point. Celtic’s December was positive overall, as the club won five of their nine games, drawing once and losing on three occasions. Those defeats came against Salzburg in the Europa League, a 2-0 loss to Hibs and the aforementioned defeat to Rangers in the last game of the year.

The Hoops were also able to retain their League Cup trophy, as they defeated an in-form Aberdeen side 1-0, thanks to a goal by Ryan Christie. After a very successful 2018, Rodgers’ side then went to Dubai for the first weeks of the year, ensuring that his players get the rest they need. Moreover, the club has been active in the transfer market, bringing in players such as PSG’s Timothy Weah, Oliver Burke from West Brom and Vakoun Issouf Bayo from Slovakian side Dunajska Streda.

Following the bankruptcy of Airdrieonians FC back in 2002, Airdrie United rose from the ashes of the old club. Fortunately, the Diamonds were able to change their name back to their original one just over ten years later.

The club currently plays in League One, sitting in 5th place with 30 points to their name. They find themselves a mere three points from the promotion spots after 21 games in the competition. However, automatic promotion seems almost an impossible achievement for 2nd-place Raith Rovers, let alone Airdrieonians, as Arbroath are flying high in the division.

The Diamonds haven’t lost a game since mid-December, after the final month of the year got off to a rocky start, as Ian Murray’s side lost twice and drew once in the first 15 days. The club would go on to win their last two games of the year, carrying their good form into 2019 with a 2-1 win over East Fife before drawing with 2nd-placed Raith Rovers last weekend.

The club couldn’t have had any worse luck when they were drawn against Celtic, who are undoubtedly the best club in the country. It’ll be a huge test for the North Lanarkshire club, but they could even take their hosts by surprise with a sneaky win.

Celtic have already proven this season that they’re still as strong as they have been these last few years, already picking up the League Cup trophy back in December. Moreover, the club hasn’t lost in 90 minutes in the Scottish FA Cup since their 2-1 defeat to Aberdeen in February 2014, and we’re going to back the Glasgow club to continue their streak and win to nil, with a final result of 4-0.
