Chapecoense vs Gremio Predictions

Sunday’s Brazilian Serie A action features a clash between Chapecoense and Gremio. A tight game is expected overall, with very few chances at either end of the pitch.

Coming into this season as one of the favourites for relegation, it’s fair to say Chapecoense haven’t caused too many surprises and indeed find themselves in a battle to stay in the top flight. Currently standing inside the drop zone on goal difference, with a game extra played on the sides directly above them, Chape’s 16 points from 15 outings is not a healthy total.

Nonetheless, it’s clear where the side’s struggles are coming and that’s on the road, so confidence won’t be too low coming into this clash. Gilson Kleina’s men are yet to win any of their 8 away outings, taking just 3 points in the process but are unbeaten on home soil, winning 3 of the 7 games contested and are proving a very difficult nut to crack with the Arena Conda crowd behind them.

Meanwhile, visitors Gremio come into the clash off the back of an excellent midweek win over 2nd placed Sao Paulo and now lie just 5 points short of leaders Flamengo. Tricolor came into the season with hopes of lifting the title and if they can find a bit more consistency in their performances, they’ll certainly be in with a shout of finishing the season top of the pile.

Whilst not quite to the same extreme as Chape, Gremio’s away performances have also been letting them down over recent matches. Renato Gaucho’s men have won their last two home matches but lost 1-0 away at Vasco last time out on the road and having drawn 0-0 at Sport Recife in the trip preceding that match, they’re hardly pulling up any trees on their travels.

Ultimately, whilst there is certainly a disparity in terms of the quality the two sides possess, we think an even match looks to be in order. The two parties will be fighting at opposite ends of the table for the remainder of the campaign, but Chape are a strong outfit on their own patch and Gremio are far from dominant on enemy territory.

Thus, backing the draw looks a great way to play at more than reasonable odds and that’s exactly where our money is going. Chapecoense have drawn 5 of their last 8 home matches across all competitions and 3 of their last 4 games overall, whilst 2 of Gremio’s last 5 away games have also ended all square.

Backing the clash to end without score also appeals. 2 of Chape’s last 4 matches have ended without score and considering both of Gremio’s aforementioned away draws have also seen no goals, it’s not a scoreline that is unimaginable come full time.
