Chelsea 2-1

Reason for tip

Chelsea are scoring an average of 2.5 goals per game at home in the last couple of months while Wolves have conceded 12 in five previous away league trips to London. A 2-1 win is taken because Wolves have lost three of their four away games in London by scores of 3-2, 3-2 and 2-1.

Blues can turn the tables on Wolves

Chelsea will look to turn the tables on Wolves when they host Gary O’Neil’s side at Stamford Bridge, having lost 2-1 on their Christmas Eve trip to Molineux.

The game will forever be remembered for Raheem Sterling’s somewhat selfish waste of a gift-wrapped early chance to put Chelsea 1-0 up, but the Blues were second-best for almost the entire 90 minutes. They come into this one in need of a boost after being made to look like mid-table also-rans by Liverpool in midweek. Mauricio Pochettino put the defeat down to a lack of experience but a lack of belief might be closer to the truth.

Chelsea are a team that rarely recover from bad starts and need the confidence of an early goal to produce their best. They do their best work at home, where they have won seven of their last 10 home games in all competitions, which should give them a chance on Sunday.

Wolves were left howling in frustration at Manchester United’s late winner on Thursday, having done all the hard work to get back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to 3-3. O’Neil’s side showed they do not know when they are beaten – a characteristic which has been evident in many of their away games this term.

Wolves usually struggle to make capital gains

That said, trips to London have been a nightmare for Wolves. They lost 3-2 at Crystal Palace, 3-2 at Fulham, 2-1 at Arsenal and 3-0 at West Ham before finally earning their first capital gains with a 4-1 win at Brentford.

Their three away league wins this term came courtesy of a couple of late strikes from now-departed big man Sasa Kalajdzic and a superb display from Hwang Hee-Chan, who missed out again here while on international duty.

Chelsea should have enough firepower to get the job done this weekend, particularly with Christopher Nkunku looking sharp again after injury. He bagged his second of an injury-interrupted season at Anfield on Wednesday and can be trusted to score again as long as he gets a decent outing.

Backing Chelsea to win with at least three strikes in the game also looms a solid play, given the Blues have bagged 25 goals in total across their last 10 home games while Wolves have shipped a grand total of 12 in their five London visits so far this term.
