Cheltenham vs Crewe Predictions

After a torrid start to the season, things are starting to look up for Cheltenham Town, with a new manager and a win under their belts.

They had began the season in truly awful fashion, losing their first four matches without scoring that goal. It was a sequence of games that saw manager Gary Johnson sacked, despite picking up a point in his last game against Macclesfield. The immediate result was a win against Cambridge but three consecutive losses after that, which included a 4-0 loss to Forest Green Rovers in the EFL Trophy to sour the already bad mood around the club.

However, they got a great result in their last game away at just-relegated and former promotion favourites Northampton Town. They won that match 3-1, taking their chances which included a penalty that was scored by substitute striker Connor Thomas. In addition, the team showed great resolve to hold on after Northampton pulled one back. That result should do much to lift the spirits around the club.

Further added to the positivity around the club has been the appointment of Burnley under-23 coach and club legend Michael Duff as the new manager. It could be an inspired appointment, as Duff knows the club inside out and will have the immediate support of the fans behind. However, he is also inexperienced and the appointment still represents a risk.

It is fair to say Crewe Alexandra have endured a mixed start to the season, which some great and terrible results to leave them in mid-table.

They arguably got the result of the opening weekend in League Two, with a 6-0 demolition of perennial strugglers Morecambe to set the season off in the best way. Whilst they lost their next game against a quality Newport side, they managed to hold MK Dons to a draw and thrash Macclesfield Town 3-0 at home, with in-form striker Jordan Bowery getting two of the goals.

However, these results have been sandwiched in between some dreadful performances. In particular, they lost 6-0 away to Colchester. They looked shell-shocked throughout that match and did away with the goal difference they had built up from their wins. Moreover, they lost their next game against Carlisle to really sour the positive start to the season they had made.

Although, they responded well against Macclesfield, and picked up their first away win of the season in their last match against Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Trophy. In what must have been a thrilling match, the game ended 3-4 to the visitors for them to experience a win away for the first time this season. However, in the league they remain without a win or draw away from home and this bodes ill for the rest of the season.

Indeed, we don’t think they will build on their win against Tranmere with a result against Cheltenham. The home side will be buoyed by the appointment of the new manager and recent win against Northampton. Thus, backing Cheltenham to win is a smart move.

Furthermore, we think Cheltenham will be able to contain Crewe’s attack, especially with their lack of confidence away. Therefore, a 2-0 correct score-line reflects what could be a great first game in charge for Michael Duff.
