Cheltenham vs Oldham Predictions

  • Cheltenham conceded at least one goal in 82% of their home matches.
  • Cheltenham have scored in 91% of their home matches.
  • 65% of Cheltenham’s conceded goals were conceded at home.
  • Oldham have conceded in 82% of their away matches.

A frustrating end to the year

Cheltenham Town will be pretty pleased with how 2019 has gone as a whole as they finish the decade firmly established in League Two and with a solid platform to build on for the remainder of this campaign. The hosts come into this weekend’s match with 38 points from their 24 games so far, but after a disappointing festive period they will probably left thinking things could have been so much better.

The Robins have had to settle for a share of the spoils in six of their last eight league matches and, while they might be averaging a goal per game in the same time period, they have also conceded just as frequently. It is a plight which they have suffered for the majority of the campaign and the fact that both teams have scored in 73% of the league matches at Whaddon Road this season shows just how vulnerable they can be.

Struggling to find some form

The latest side to make the trip to Whaddon Road in the hope of coming away with three points is an Oldham side who will be pretty glad to see the back of 2019. The visitors have struggled to adapt to life in the bottom tier of the Football League and after suffering three defeats in their last five outings, they are nervously looking over their shoulder and fearing the prospect of dropping into non-league football.

However, Oldham have had two wins over that same five match spell and with 12 points on the road, they have proven that they are capable of performing on opposition territory. However, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in 82% of their matches away from home so there is still clearly plenty left to be improved upon if they are to start to pull themselves away from the danger zone.

Nothing between them

Although the hosts have been stronger on home soil this season, they have failed to get over the line with the three points on a pretty regular basis of late, which leads us to believe there is plenty of hope for the visitors. Although Oldham may not be at the top of the game at present, they have been solid enough on the road and have two morale boosting wins over the festive period. When you factor in that 73% of Cheltenham’s home matches have finished with both teams finding the back of the net, then backing them both to score in this fixture appears to be the way to go.

In terms of a correct score tip, the fact that four of Cheltenham’s last five matches have finished in a 1-1 draw is a hard stat to ignore. This is backed up by the fact that they have drawn 11 times this term and, although their visitors average just 0.91 goals per game and have conceded an average of 1.73 goals per game on the road, so a 1-1 stalemate appears to represent the best opportunity for a decent return.
