Chicago Fire vs New England Revolution Predictions

Chicago Fire managed to progress in a tense and entertaining US Open Cup match in midweek as they beat Columbus Crew on penalties, but back in the MLS they are looking to rediscover the form that sent them soaring up the table last season.

They finished up in 3rd position in the MLS Eastern Conference after finishing bottom for the previous two seasons, but this season has seen them slip back down to earth somewhat. They come into this match 8th in the Eastern Conference, but still only two points off the playoff zone.

It has been a frustratingly inconsistent first half to the campaign, and their recent form reflects that as well. They have won three and lost three of their last six league matches, scoring a respectable eight goals but conceding a disappointing 11 at the other end of the pitch.

New England Revolution are having similar frustrations. They, unlike their opponents, were knocked out of the US Open Cup in midweek with a 3-2 defeat to Louisville City. They have now won two, drawn two, and lost two of their last six competitive matches. This comes after they went unbeaten for their opening four games of the campaign too, which seemed to instil a sense of complacency among the players.

Still, that promising start has left them in a decent position in the table. They are currently 5th, with a four point cushion before dropping out of the playoff zone and level on points with New York Red Bulls above them. If their form continues in this vein, you wouldn’t expect that position to hold for much longer.

As is always the case with Revolution, it’s their form on the road that lets them down. They have won just one of their six trips away this season, and that came over two months ago at the start of April. Their last four matches have yielded just two draws, but you get the feeling that this could be one for the neutrals.

The visitors have seen a huge 21 goals in their last four competitive away games, scoring nine and conceding 12, to make for some very entertaining viewing. Chicago Fire have seen eight goals in their last two home matches as well, and considering each of Revolution’s last four away games have seen five or more goals, we like the look of Over 4.5 Goals along with a 3-2 win for the hosts.

We may be backing a home win, but it’s Christian Penilla who looks the best value for our anytime goalscorer predictions. He has scored five goals for New England this season, and three of them have come in his last four away matches in the MLS. At this price he looks great value for money.

Chicago Fire Predicted Lineup: Sanchez, Elis, Kappelhof, Vincent, Corrales, Schweinsteiger, Adams, Bronico, Katai, Campos, Nikolic

New England Revolution Predicted Lineup: Turner, Farrell, Mlinar, Anibaba, Tierney, Zahibo, Caicedo, Nemeth, Fagundez, Penilla, Bunbury
