Colchester vs Exeter City Predictions

We may still be early in the season but already the race for the League Two title is hotting up. Although the early season evidence suggests Lincoln City and MK Dons look like they are set to slug it out for top spot, there is still plenty of time for others to join the party and the winner of this weekend’s clash between Colchester United and Exeter City will certainly be hoping they have the capabilities to lift the league winners trophy come the end of the season.

Colchester’s 2-0 loss to Newport halted a run of two straight league wins and they could slip out of the top seven if they lose again. It is a fate that they will be keen to avoid, but their form going into this match leaves little to be desired. Prior to that defeat away to Newport, the U’s were also defeated away from home against Accrington Stanley and Cambridge United in the FA Cup and the Checkatrade Trophy respectively. Fortunately, Colchester are back on home soil this weekend and given that 68% of their points have come in front of their own fans, it will certainly be a welcome relief.

Exeter City were denied a first League 2 win in five attempts when Jayden Stockley’s own-goal handed Northampton Town a 2-2 draw. It has been a difficult few weeks for the Grecians as they have dropped away from the top of the table and now face a battle to keep pace with the rest of the chasing pack. Although they still score plenty, City have conceded at regular intervals and their last six outings have seen them concede a total of 10 times.

With both sides in need of the points, we think that neither will want to be the ones to make the mistake and this, in turn, could result in quite a tense and nervy affair. Given that six of Colchester’s last seven outings have finished with less than 2.5 goals scored, we think we are in for a similar match this time around and backing the same outcome looks to be the way to go.
