Colo Colo vs Corinthians Predictions

Thursday’s Copa Libertadores round of 16, first leg action sees Chileans Colo Colo and Brazilians Corinthians doing battle. The hosts will be looking to open up an advantage ahead of the second leg.

For Colo Colo, just being in the knockout phase is a feat in itself, after a decade of disappointment, For a club of their size, to have not made it out of a Libertadores group since 2007 was a real embarrassment but this year’s group of players have finally managed to end the pain and will now be looking to make a deep run in the competition.

Los Albos arrive in pretty strong shape, having won 3 of their last 4 outings, but they did suffer defeat at Deportes Temuco over the weekend, no doubt distracted with this match in mind. Having won 7 of their last 10 home games, the Chileans are clearly a real force at the Estadio Monumental and with a capacity crowd expected, they’ll certainly be able to call upon maximum support for what is one of their biggest matches in years.

Meanwhile, whilst Corinthians came into the year expecting to challenge for honours both domestically and on the continental scene, they certainly don’t look like doing so now. Timao were by far and away the strongest outfit in Brazilian football last season as they romped to the title but the loss of manager Fabio Carille and keys players such as Fabian Balbuena, Maycon and Rodriguinho has hit the team hard and they look a far weaker proposition now.

Indeed, since Osmas Loss took over from Carille, Corinthians have won just 5 of their 13 outings and showings have been particularly concerning on the road, which has to be a big worry ahead of Thursday’s match. 4 of Corinthians’ last 5 matches on enemy territory have seen them fall to defeat and without a clean sheet in 8 matches as visitors, they look like facing an uphill battle in the Chilean capital.

Ultimately, over two legs this tie should be a close one, with Corinthians’’ still relatively competitive on their own patch. However, taking this as a standalone 90 minutes, the picture becomes a lot clearer and we see good value in backing Colo Colo on the Draw No Bet line.

Colo Colo should come flying out of the traps and look to pin this brittle Corinthians team under pressure. The visitors have been showing very little resolve as visitors and it’s hard to see them escaping what is always a difficult venue to visit with parity in tact. At the very worst, Colo Colo shouldn’t lose, but we think they can edge ahead in the tie with a 1-0 win on the night.
