Cologne vs St Pauli Predictions

After they made a winning return to action, Koln would’ve been looking to take another step in the right direction last time out, though they were beaten in the capital by a sturdy Union Berlin outfit. After that defeat, Markus Anfang’s men, who luckily didn’t fall any further behind league leaders Hamburg, will be looking to use the return to home soil as a springboard for success.

Koln did get beat last time out, but their efforts weren’t too bad, so it’s important not to react too negatively to that defeat. In fact, on the overall balance of play and the fact that the two teams were separated by just 0.01 expected goals suggests that defeat for the Billy Goats was unfortunate.

Given their efforts on home soil this season, the hosts will fancy their chances of regaining the winning thread. At home, Koln have been in blistering goal-scoring form this season; they’ve scored an average of 2.8, which is quite staggering, while they’re averaging a very pleasing 2.22 expected goals for. However, when we combine these numbers with the fact that they’ve conceded an average of 1.5 goals and have been breached in all but two of their home games during the current campaign, it’s easy to see that they’re not quite the full package.

Like Koln, St Pauli are useful going forward, or at least they have been in recent times. The visitors come here having scored in each of their last nine league games, while they’re averaging 1.7 goals per game and notched three times against Union Berlin last time out.

It took a while for St. Pauli to come to the party on the road this season, but they’ve now found the back of the net in each of their last five travelling matches, scoring a total eight goals in the process. Such numbers bode well ahead of a match against a Koln side that will almost certainly give chances away.

Interestingly, both teams are coming off the back of matches against Union Berlin. Friday’s hosts lost 2-0, while St Pauli won 3-2. The results were different, though the performances of both against that opponent, coupled with their overall efforts in 2. Bundesliga this season lead us to believe that there’s a touch of value to be had by backing ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’.

Neither side has been short on the goal front in their respective home and away matches of late, while both created and gave away a good amount against Union Berlin recently. Add in the fact that Koln have made a habit of being involved in high-scoring games at RheinEnergieSTADION this season and a punt on the goals to flow on Friday evening is tough to resist.
