Under-manned Crew should still extinguish Fire

Chicago Fire may have caught a slight break as they prepare to face Columbus Crew in Ohio because the defending MLS Cup champions will be without some key men on Sunday.

The Crew are without first-choice goalkeeper Eloy Room due to quarantine after he returned from international duty and three other starters from their 2-1 win over Toronto last month are carrying knocks that could keep them out.

Coach Caleb Porter is likely to use his squad depth ahead of a busy period of fixtures so the struggling visitors may escape without a complete caning.

The Black and Gold have been the closest thing to a home win machine in the MLS over the past 12 months, emerging victorious in 13 of their last 16 at Historic Crew Stadium.

Add into the mix that this is going to be the last ever time they play at the ground before moving to Lower.com Field and you can guarantee that Porter’s side – whoever he selects – will be up for this.

Fire haven’t won an MLS road game since the back end of 2019 so we won’t be siding with them here.

But they have scored in five of their last seven visits to Columbus so could at least make things interesting by grabbing a goal.

And, although they have only managed to register four times this season, their expected goals for tally is above ten – which means they really should be doing better than second bottom of their conference.

A narrow 2-1 defeat on Sunday, as we forecast here, won’t lift them up the table but it may herald improved results in the not-too-distant future.
