Corinthians vs Vitoria Predictions

Sunday’s Brazilian Serie A clash sees reigning champions Corinthians doing battle with Vitoria. After hitting a rocky spell since Fabio Carille left, the hosts will be looking to pick up the three points in what looks like a very winnable fixture.

A month has now passed since ex-boss Carille left for pastures new in Saudi Arabia, but Timao still don’t really look like the all-conquering side they were under him, winning just 1 of Osmar Loss’ 5 games in charge.

Currently placed 9th, some 8 points behind leaders Flamengo, it’s clear that Corinthians are going to have to start picking up points sooner rather than later if they are to successfully defend their crown. Confidence can still be relatively high coming into this clash in front of the home crowd, given that both away games since Loss’ came in have ended in defeat, but under the new boss 4 points from a possible 6 have been collected on home soil; making up part of a 13 home match Serie A unbeaten record going back to the end of last season.

Meanwhile it’s been more of the same for Vitoria so far this season; threatening in attack but simply porous defensively. That formula saw them involved in a relegation battle last campaign and with it being continued this season, little change looks afoot for the rest of the year.

Remarkably, Leão da Barra’s 1-0 home win over Chapecoense in mid-week ended a sequence which had seen both nets hit in 25 of their last Serie A fixtures, illustrating their performances at both ends of the pitch. Whilst that aforementioned victory lifted Vagner Mancini’s troops up to 14th, it’s still hard to see them coming into this trip with any sort of confidence, given they’ve lost 7 of their last 9 away games, including a 5-2 battering at Santos last time out on the road.

Ultimately, although they’re not flying at the moment, this is a game Corinthians simply have to be winning and one which we expect them to. Man for man, they are a better side than Vitoria and typically so strong at the Corinthians Arena, it’d be a huge surprise if they dropped points.

Vitoria have conceded an average of 2.44 goals a game over their last 9 away games and those type of figures make it hard for them to secure a result anywhere. Overall, we’re more than happy to back a home win, with a 2-1 margin of victory on the cards.

Corinthians possible starting XI: Walter; Mantuan, Balbuena, Henrique, Sidcley; Gabriel, Maycon, Pedrinho, Rodriguinho, Vital; Roger.

Vitoria possible starting XI: Santos; Lucas, Maia, Kanu, Jeferson; Ramon, Andrade, Rhayner, Neilton, Wallyson; Lima.
