Cork City vs Rosenborg Predictions

This will be a big night at Turners Cross as Cork City target a place in the Europa League play-off round. They are clear underdogs against Rosenborg both on Thursday night and across the tie but the Irish champions are no mugs and they are bidding to emulate Dundalk, who made the Europa League group stage two seasons ago.

Interestingly Dundalk met Rosenborg in Champions League qualifying just last season and took them to Extra Time in the 2nd Leg, so there is perhaps not quite the gulf in class that the bookies are suggesting here between the champions of Ireland and Norway. Both sides have already been eliminated from the Champions League, with Rosenborg losing to Celtic while Cork City lost to Legia Warsaw.

Both teams are also in the middle of their domestic seasons. Cork find themselves again battling Dundalk for the title. They hold a two point advantage at the top but have played two games more, so it promises to go to the wire. Cork do come into this in good form though having won all of their last three league matches after they received a bye in the last round of this competition.

Rosenborg returned from their domestic summer break at the weekend winning 3-1 at Ranheim and they are involved in an equally tight domestic title race. However they’ve not impressed in Europe, particularly away from home. They were surprisingly beaten 1-0 in Iceland by Valur in their first Champions League qualifier, before a 3-1 defeat at Celtic Park left them with far too much to do in the 2nd Leg of that tie.

Those two pretty weak away showings should give Cork plenty of belief and they look well capable of at least avoiding defeat, with home advantage in the 1st Leg. They’ve netted 10 goals in 3 matches since the defeat to Legia Warsaw and their overall home record has been very good. They’ve won 14 of their last 16 competitive matches at Turner’s Cross and with a home crowd behind them are capable of making it difficult for Rosenborg.

The Norwegians aren’t the force they once were and although they did well to make the Europa League group stage last term, they were unimpressive in it, winning just 1 of their 6 matches and taking just one point on their travels, away to Macedonian side Vardar.

This is another awkward European trip for them and they might even settle for a draw, given what happened in Iceland a month back. Overall backing Cork Double Chance looks to offer value.
