Danubio vs Atletico Mineiro Predictions

Tuesday’s Copa Libertadores second round qualification, first leg clash sees Uruguayans Danubio doing battle with Brazilians Atletico Mineiro. The pressure is on the hosts ahead of the second leg, but a close game is expected to be in order.

Indeed, Danubio come into this tie as huge underdogs given the disparity in resources available to each outfit and if they are to have any realistic hope of causing an upset, Tuesday’s match is one they simply have to win. La Franja are returning to the competition for the first time since they lost 5 of 6 group matches in 2015 so it’s a big night for them, but there’s no doubting they face a huge ask to progress any further in the competition.

It’s hard to know quite what to expect from this Danubio side, given this is their first competitive match of the year and most of the playing squad has changed, as well as the manager. The Uruguayans qualified for the Libertadores courtesy of their 3rd placed standing in last season’s aggregate domestic table but this fixture represents the start of a new era under boss Pablo Rodríguez.

Meanwhile, Atletico Mineiro are expected to make it through the next two qualification rounds and failing to make the group stage is simply not an option if they do not want to come under fire from supporters. Back in the competition after a 1 year absence courtesy of their 6th placed finish in Serie A last season, Galo are hopeful of putting together a deep continental run.

Unlike Danubio, Atletico have played plenty of competitive outings in 2019, albeit frequently with rotated sides playing. From 5 Campeonato Mineiro outings, Atletico have recorded 3 wins, including in each of the last two, so confidence is pretty high in travelling ranks, but this trip to Uruguay is certainly where the season really begins for the visitors.

Ultimately, over two legs we cannot envisage Atletico slipping up but taking this as a standalone fixture, we’re anticipating quite an even game. Home advantage is a big factor in the Libertadores and should at least allow the hosts to give the visitors a run for their money.

All things considered, it’s a draw we like the look of backing. Danubio have drawn 5 of their last 7 home matches and 6 of their last 9 games overall and with Atletico having won just 1 of their last 8 Copa Libertadores trips, we think the visitors will look to keep things tight ahead of the return leg, meaning a 0-0 draw appears on the cards.
