DC United vs Atlanta United Predictions

DC United and Atlanta United both had mixed results during pre-season, and with the reining MLS Cup winners bringing in Frank de Boer as their new manager concerns over their recent performances have been mounting. When these two sides meet goals are always scored, so we have high hopes for Sunday’s game and will be expecting a very competitive ninety ninety minutes.

DC United ended their pre-season with a 3-0 defeat away at Montreal Impact, but they were victorious against both Tampa Bay Rowdies and Bethlehem Steel. Atlanta United started pre-season with a 7-1 win over Seattle Sounders, but draws against LAFC and LA Galaxy followed. However, in the 1st leg of their Champions League tie against Herediano, the MLS side were beaten 3-1 and they are now at risk of exiting the competition. Atlanta United play their 2nd leg on Friday, meaning they have very little time to recuperate and prepare for Sunday’s match against DC United.

The head to head record between these two clubs and their results in pre-season suggests we will see a decent number of goals scored on Sunday, and we’re leaning towards a home win for DC United. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in five of the six previous encounters between these two clubs, and DC United have won all of their three home games against Atlanta United. The visitors have the 2nd leg of their Champions League tie to negotiate before they can focus on Sunday’s game and that’s bound to have an effect of de Boar’s men. Three of DC United’s last six and three of Atlanta United’s last four matches have produced over 2.5 goals, and with that, and all of the above, in mind we’re expecting to see at least three goals on Sunday and for DC United to keep up their 100% home record against Atlanta United.

Patrick Mullins has left DC United for Columbus Crew, while Irish midfielder Chris McCann has joined the club from Sunday’s guests Atlanta United. Atlanta United have spent big on Gonzalo Martínez who they hope will replace Miguel Almirón who moved to Newcastle United. We’re confident that over 2.5 goals will be scored on Sunday, and have backed DC United to claim a narrow 2-1 win. The hosts have a great record against Atlanta United, with four wins from their six matches and have a 100% record at home. The visitors looked a different team in their one competitive game under Frank de Boer and there are feelings out there that the champions will struggle to replicate their dominance of 2018.
