DC United vs Philadelphia Union Predictions

Just three points and two places separate DC United in third and the Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union heading into their MLS clash on Monday, but both teams have been putting in below-par performances over the last month or so and need to see a change in form or risk slipping down the table.

DC United made the trip to Chicago Fire last time out and were lucky to escape with a point after mustering just one shot on target during the ninety minutes. The game ended goalless and Chicago Fire will feel hard done by after having more corners and far more attempts on goal than their guests, but only have themselves to blame for not carving out the winning goal.

Philadelphia Union had 61% of the overall possession away at Montreal Impact and seven more corners but still ended up losing the game 4-0. A goal in each half for Montreal duo Lappalainen and Okwonkwo lead to a terrible day at the office for Philadelphia Union, who will still be scratching their heads as to how they ended up getting thrashed in a game they controlled the possession in.

The form and performances of these two clubs over the last month suggest that we won’t see both teams score in Sunday’s match and that DC United are best placed to claim all three points. One or both teams have failed to score in three of DC United’s last six and each of Philadelphia Union’s last three matches. Philadelphia Union have lost three of their last four away games and failed to score in their last two matches on the road, which is why we’re backing DC United to win 1-0 on Monday.
